The Debt Bomb by Tom Coburn and John Hart

If you read one book on the national debt this year, right now I’d recommend that it should be The Debt Bomb (Nashville:  Thomas Nelson, 2012) by Tom Coburn, Republican Senator from Oklahoma, and John Hart.  Based on his own experience in the Senate, Coburn explains “where we are and how we got here,” as well as how to defuse “the debt bomb,” which he has been trying to do for years.

After reading his explanation and examples of careerism in the book, I am convinced that it is past time to institute term limits for members of Congress.

While Coburn presents ideas for dealing with our unsustainable entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid), I wish he had clearly stated the fact that these programs are unconstitutional and need to be eliminated at the federal level.

Appendix C is a list of oversight reports released by Coburn’s office.  These can be found on his official website on the Oversight and Investigations page (under Issues and Legislation).  The most important one to read is probably “Back in Black:  A Deficit Reduction Plan.”
