Screwed! by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann

After all the hype, I was disappointed with Dick Morris’s and Eileen McGann’s new book, Screwed!  How Foreign Countries Are Ripping America Off and Plundering Our Economy–and How Our Leaders Help Them Do It (New York:  Broadside Books, 2012).  Though it has a lot of good information, there is no index, and the notes, which are in no standard style, are hard to use.

In addition, the writing style is not consistent.  Paragraphs of documented information written in a professional style will be followed or preceded by an informal sentence or passage.  Are the former sections McGann’s and the latter Morris’s?

Since there is no index, I’m unable to find the page where the authors stated that they believe in global warming and are “agnostic” on whether or not it is caused by human beings.  I’ve had my doubts about Morris’s claim to be conservative, and this statement supports it.

In addition, Morris and McGann promote the China Currency Bill, which “passed the Senate 63-35 with Republicans voting against it by 16-30.”  They list the Republican Senators who voted for and against the bill.  Among those voting against it are conservative Senators DeMint, Lee, Paul, Rubio, and Toomey (128).  If those men voted against it, they must have a good reason, and I trust their judgment over the authors’.

I also wonder how much of the book is hyperbole or hysteria.  For example, in his interviews about the book that I heard, Morris painted a gloomy picture of what will happen if certain treaties (covered in Part Two, pages, 37-77), particularly the Law of the Sea Treaty, are passed in a lame-duck session in Congress this fall (assuming Romney is elected).  What I haven’t heard him mention and don’t remember reading in the book is that approving a treaty requires that “two thirds of the Senators present concur” (U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 2).  Are there enough RINOs in the Senate to allow that to happen?
